Vagia, 30th July, 1942

Two weeks ago, I wrote I would never be able to write anything again. And I still feel that way because the worst thing I could ever imagine has happened. Actually, I could never have imagined something this bad, so that’s a lie.

Mr Kleftis thinks I should write something. He says it is better for me than sitting with the goats and not doing anything at all. But Mrs Tzabó said that when I write I should try to use long words—descriptive words she called them, and things called metaphors, too, which I’m not very good at. And it’s really hard to do at the best of times, but even harder when I’m so sad and I don’t want to do anything at all. But because Mr Kleftis is trying to help me, I will write something.

So I’ll write that the sun is shining as brightly as the inside of an oyster shell (that’s a metaphor), and that the juicy, plump lemons are ready for picking (good descriptive words), and that the shiny green olives and the hard-as-a-diamond pistachios are going to be a bumper crop this year. More descriptive words. And that one of our hens sadly died of old age. The big black one fortunately, not my favourite fluffy red one. And I’ve drawn the flag of France, but I got the colours the wrong way around, so I threw it in the bin. The capital of France is Paris; everyone knows that.

But I can’t write about the German soldiers killing my lovely brother Dimitris. Not yet, maybe not ever. I just can’t, it hurts too much.
